Gillian Lee

A Profile of Gillian Lee

Gillian Lee started painting when she was a student at the Royal Acadamy of Music. She is self taught and thinks of herself as a "Sunday painter", a phrase used by le Douanier Rousseau. However a lifetime in the company of artists has undoubtedly helped to educate her eye.

Her paintings are gouache on card, small enough to fit into her paint box. In both subject and colour one is reminded of Vuillard, whilst the boldness of design and the sureness in her approach recall Matisse.

She was married to the late artist Dick Lee (1923–2001) and has three children.

(Painting – "Gillian playing the piano" by Dick Lee, 1985)
